5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful narrative, fresh, witty and delicious., 20 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Colette's portrayal of a young girls journey through adolescence is written with an ease and simplicity that belie the sheer beauty of the story. The inimitable Claudine novels are both touching and hillarious, particularly Claudine's impudence towards her elders and the relationship between 'Mademoiselle' & her 'Luce'!!! Claudine's road to love and woman-hood is told sweetly; sometimes painfully, sometimes joyfully, but always beautifully. Her love, once found, is a combination of fairy-tale and reality. Throughout 'The Claudine Novels' there is an empathy between the reader and Claudine and at the close of the book one feels almost as if one has been deprived of something good to eat.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the great French stylists, 19 Jun 2001
By A Customer
With great simplicity of language but also much psychological insight, Colette evokes the playful, impudent, passionate, sometimes awkward character of the maturing Claudine. The first novel, Claudine a l'ecole, is a particularly good portrait of teenage school life. My only small reservation concerns the translation, which is slightly old-fashioned at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars My delicious Claudine, 10 Mar 1999
By A Customer
For a book written in the Victorian era, it's very modern. Claudine evokes a mood, you can taste and feel Paris in 1900. It's a little racy, Claudine has both male and female lovers. How I wish there were more installments to Claudine!
